5 things no one tells you about houseplants

5 choses qu’on ne vous dit pas sur les plantes d’intérieur

It shouldn't be that complicated to keep a plant alive (that's what you tell yourself in the shop when you buy your 1st indoor plant). But why didn't anyone tell me that it would be so complicated to keep a plant alive? (and that's what you say to yourself a month later).

Don't panic: we are here to help you. Here are 5 things people don't tell you about houseplants that will help you take better care of them.

1. Some plants really don't like the sun

Many plants can thrive in a dark apartment. They are usually native to tropical forests where they grow under trees or other plants. Ferns such as Adiantum raddianum or Asparagus densiflorus, Calathea or Sansevieria for example are perfect if you have little light in your home.

2. A plant that loses its leaves can still be healthy

Some plants like Oxalis can go dormant for a while, losing all their leaves and looking dead. But do not despair too quickly! Place your plant out of the sun and wait patiently, it will soon sprout new shoots.

3. Cacti love the cold

Cacti are generally believed to be heat-loving because they come from the desert, where there is plenty of sun and very hot temperatures. But that's to forget that the temperatures there drop drastically once the sun sets, and at night it can be quite cold. To keep your cactus happy, place it in a sunny but cool location.

4. Plants are allergic to dust

Dust that settles on plant leaves can prevent photosynthesis and do a lot of harm to your plants. The solution is to mist your plants regularly and wipe their leaves with a damp sponge or cloth, ideally at least once a month. You can also pass them in the shower with a light flow of water.

5. Even plants need a babysitter.

Plants do not water themselves. Make sure they have enough water before going on vacation or a weekend. You can use oyas which will water your plants independently when you are away.
